Y9 Arconics Manufacturing Challenge Success!

A small group of Y9 students had a unique opportunity to explore the many different career paths available at local advanced engineering company Arconic in Ecclesfield recently. Arconic are a multinational advanced engineering and manufacturing company who develop and manufacture high performance, engineered products and solutions for the aerospace, industrial gas turbine, commercial transportation and oil and gas markets.

Together with an informative presentation about the company and what it does, students were given a tour of the site, seeing for themselves how the many different products are created and learn about the high level skills needed to work in the industry.

After a lunch of wood fired pizza, they were up against students from other schools from across the country, competing in the inaugural Arconic Manufacturing Challenge. Teams were challenged to create a new areospace company, working with tight budgets and strict quality control to produce cutting edge paper planes that met customer specifications. Teams who displayed the best teamwork, communication, attention to detail and ultimately earning the most profit, would be the winners. After a hard fought afternoon, against stiff competition, our Y9’s demonstarted the necessary grit and determination to be crowned the winners!

Well done to the students who took part. Hopefully next years Y9’s can sucessfully defend your title.

A massive thanks to all the staff at Aronic Ecclesfield for providing such an engageing and well organised event.
