Recently, Ecclesfield School was featured as part of a BBC discussion about reading and literacy, highlighting the importance of developing strong reading habits in young people. At Ecclesfield, we firmly believe that reading is one of the most powerful tools for improving academic achievement, personal development and future opportunities.
Why Reading Matters
Reading is the foundation of success across the curriculum. Whether students are studying English, Mathematics, Science, History, Geography, Art or PE, they need to be able to read instructions, understand information, develop subject vocabulary and communicate effectively. Our literacy programme emphasises that strong reading skills help students understand lessons, complete homework, learn new vocabulary and perform well in assessments and examinations.
Beyond academic success, reading develops memory, concentration, critical thinking and imagination. It helps young people become informed citizens who can navigate an increasingly complex world, evaluate information critically and make informed decisions.
Importantly, at Ecclesfield we recognise the strong relationship between literacy and student outcomes. Reading age is one of the factors considered when supporting students throughout their school journey and when planning pathways into Key Stage 4, alongside attainment, attitudes to learning and other measures.
Reading Age and GCSE Success
Our experience consistently shows that students with stronger reading skills are better equipped to access the curriculum, understand examination questions and demonstrate their knowledge across subjects. This is why literacy is explicitly linked to GCSE success throughout our KS4 preparation programme, including assemblies and SODA activities focused on the relationship between literacy, attendance, attitudes to learning and examination outcomes.
By analysing the outcomes from Summer 2026, we can clearly see the impact that reading age has on student achievement. This evidence reinforces our commitment to ensuring that every student improves their reading ability throughout their time at Ecclesfield.
How We Encourage Regular Reading
Creating lifelong readers requires consistency and encouragement. At Ecclesfield, reading is a visible and valued part of everyday school life. We encourage students to:
• Read for at least 20 minutes every day.
• Engage fully during tutor reading sessions.
• Participate actively in reading lessons and literacy activities.
• Explore reading recommendations from staff and curriculum areas.
• Take part in reading competitions, enrichment activities and trips.
Our aim is to help students see reading not only as a school skill but also as a source of enjoyment and personal growth.
Accelerated Reader
A key component of our literacy strategy is Accelerated Reader.
Students participate in dedicated Accelerated Reader lessons through the English curriculum in Year 7 and Year 8 and complete regular quizzes on the books they read. These quizzes help students monitor their understanding while providing staff with valuable information about reading progress.
Alongside Accelerated Reader, students complete STAR Reading Assessments three times each year. These assessments allow us to track reading ages, celebrate progress and ensure that appropriate support and challenge are provided for every learner both in and in addition to normal lessons.
Reading Opportunities in School and at Home
We are fortunate to have a school library containing more than 10,000 books, offering something for every interest and reading level. Students have regular opportunities to access the library and discover new authors and genres.
Reading opportunities include:
• Tutor reading sessions twice each week.
• Library access and borrowing opportunities.
• Accelerated Reader lessons.
• Subject-based reading across the curriculum.
• Staff and subject reading recommendations.
• Reading-focused events, activities and competitions.
At home, we encourage families to support reading by establishing regular reading routines, discussing books together and celebrating reading achievements.
Our Wider Approach to Literacy
Literacy is not confined to English lessons. It is a whole-school priority and a key part of our mission to help students become successful, informed and independent learners. Our curriculum is designed to develop vocabulary, comprehension, communication and critical thinking across all subjects.
