After three weeks offline, students at S35 have been sharing their experiences of taking part in a “Digital Detox” challenge – and many have found the results surprisingly positive.
Some described the break from social media as “refreshing” and even “quite amazing,” highlighting the benefits of stepping away from their phones. While the topic of social media limits for young people is currently being discussed nationally, students at S35 had mixed views. Many felt reducing screen time could be helpful, but questioned whether a complete ban would work, suggesting young people would likely find ways around it. Others also raised concerns about losing contact with friends.
Before the trial, some students reported spending up to 13 hours a day on their phones. During the detox, however, they said they spent more time outdoors, took part in sports, and enjoyed being with family.
Mrs Hunter, Curriculum Leader for PSHE and RE, said the majority of students enjoyed the experience, with around half saying they would not want to return to their previous level of smartphone use.
